Melodies — olden and golden
Kudos to Aircel, the sponsor and MSVTIMES.COM the organisers for having chosen the Museum Theatre for their ‘The Creator Unplugged’ show that featured M.S.Viswanathan on the piano — vintage music in an equally vintage auditorium. What more can one ask for, taken on a nostalgic trip to those good olden days? It was heartening to see many youngsters too in the crowd. Proof enough that MSV’s music is timeless.
The crowd went into raptures when the strains of ‘Pullankuzhal Kodutha,’ ‘Nee Illadha Idame Illai’ and ‘Mannulagil Indru Devan’ were played as invocation pieces. Popular TV anchor and actor Aadhavan compered the show with aplomb, chipping in with interesting anecdotes.
MSV demonstrated one of the tunes he had composed for ‘Unnai Ondru Kaetpaen,’ which was followed by the original version. Veteran violinist, M. Kalyan, played it with such intensity that absence of lyrics was hardly felt. Sakthinathan’s saxophone interlude was noteworthy. MSV was vamping on the grand piano throughout.
‘Nalai Indha Velai Parthu’ was the next, Kalyan packing it with a lot of emotion. Accordion player Rajkumar who had acted as Gemini Ganesan’s son in the film ‘Ramu’ presented ‘Kannirendum Minna Minna’ in nonchalant style with Selva caressing the drums with the brush unobtrusively. Rajkumar’s good work continued with ‘Rajavin Parvai.’
For the fans
Sakthinathan cajoled ‘Thaedinaen Vandathu’ out of his sax much to the delight of rasikas. Sekar (thumba), Ganesh (bongoes) and Nagarathinam (timings) combined well to embellish the song. MSV quipped that director Sridhar was upset with the tune composed originally for this and asked him to redo it and added that he just took five minutes to compose this version.
‘Enna Enna Vaarthaigalo’ saw MSV excelling on the piano. Rajan (keyboard) was a pillar of strength for the entire programme. Ace guitarist and son of actor M.K. Radha, Radha Vijayan had flown down from Singapore to participate in this show. He played ‘Aadavarellam Aadavaralam’ and ‘Yaar Andha Nilavu’ perfectly. His style of handling the guitar was unique. ‘Aththan Ennaththan’ oozed melody with Kalyan and Rajkumar at the helm.
Now and then, MSV took centre stage to conduct the orchestra along with Veeraraghavan and Ananthu who were doing a tremendous job. Balaji, yet another guitarist, took the lead in ‘Naan Nandri Solvaen’ and ‘Andru Vandadhum.’ ‘Ninaikka Therinda Manamae’ had Ramachandran (Shehnai) in his elements in the fill ups and interludes. He is the son of Sathyam, the inimitable shehnai player of yore. Veteran Prasad, Mullai and Ganapathy on the tabla made the programme livelier.
Opening BGMs of several MSV songs thoughtfully sewn into a medley by Vaithy of msvtimes.com were aired during the intermission — a bonus to the audience. MSV chose ‘Malai Pozhudin Mayakathilay’ impromptu as Ilaiyaraaja who was there with his son Karthik Raja had a special liking for it. Singing a few lines of the song Ilaiyaraaja explained the beauty of the composition and also how the lyrics of the charanam had made a great impact on him as a youth.
Vidyasagar, who sat glued to his seat right from the beginning, marvelled at MSV’s composing talent, underlining the amazing way in which he churned out sangatis. “He has set the grammar for light music. It is unfortunate that he is still to be recognised at the national level,” he observed. Vidyasagar, with MSV’s permission, went on to play ‘Ennai Marandhadaen’ on the piano.
Mesmerising show
P.B. Sreenivos, Sp. Muthuraman, Vairamuthu, Kamakotiyan and Madan Bob were also present. M. Kalyan was given the title, ‘Singing Violin,’ by T.K. Ramamurthy. Prasad modulating the tabla with his hammer played the entire ‘Ennadi Rakkamma’ song on it. The show wound up with ‘Malarndhum Malarada’ leaving the rasikas yearning for more. Mesmerised, and memories revived, some of them lingered long after the show was over.
As MSV accepted the standing ovation humbly, the listener’s thoughts went back to the audio clipping of Kannadasan that was played when the programme began, in which he said, “MSV knows nothing else in this world except music.” How true!
